The question I want to know, will or has this affected Caribe Tour and Metro buses traveling from Santo Domingo to Sosua? I have a trip starting the day after Thanksgiving, where I will be in Santo Domingo for 4 days and will take a Caribe Tour or a Metro bus to Sosua for the remaining 7 days. Will I have any problems? Or you think this issue will be resolve by then?

The day after Thanksgiving? By then no one will even be talking about this. Obviously that's just my opinion, but I'd bet I'm 100 percent correct. The good thing is that the taxi drivers can't afford to stay out of work, and this started out as an attention-getting, 24-hour strike. Frankly, I expect things to get back to normal by the weekend.

I'm going to ask the U.S. Embassy about the current state of bus service when I calll them later this morning. I'll report back.

You do not know what will happen day after Thanksgiving.  There is a lot of frustration building in the country over the corruption and crime in the DR.  The fact that the embassy did not have on their website not to travel on the north coast yesterday shows they were so out of touch. There were current newspapers showing street violence yet US embassy had nothing on their website. The strike represents frustration that has been building so you do not know what will happen after Thanksgiving.  I never look at the embassy website I use local newspapers as my guide.  US embassy will not tell you if there is an increase in robberies in the area your going.  There has been a spike in Santo Domingo este and Santiago you will not know that from the embassy website. So you can update everyone but ask them why they had no advisory for yesterday.  I am going to trust bourbon or what I read in local newspapers than the embassy.  Ask them using your logic will travel be safe after Thanksgiving.

The U.S. Embassy never publishes news articles on its website, not from any country. The Embassy doesn't report news. It issues advisories and is a resource for travelers. Should it be the only source of information for a traveler? Of course not.

As for Bourbon Street, I am a big supporter of his businesses. But regarding the taxi strike, Bourbon Street also wrote this in his post at the start of this thread:

I spent the whole day in Sosua. Not 1 problem here. If you are a foreigner in Sosua you won't even notice anything going on. You could get from Sosua to POP Airport with no problem.

I have said, and will say again: I beleive people flying into POP and staying in Sosua are unlikely any significant distruption -- which is exactly what Bourbon Street noticed. I also wrote that the issue currently is getting from Santigo to Sosua, which was Bourbon Street's main point. And I am going to ask the Embassy about that -- and specifically bus service -- when I call them today.

As promised, I called the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo today. I also talked with representatives from Metro Bus and Caribe Tours. These were short conversations because of the language barrier. However, the woman at Caribe told me that all buses from Santiago were departing today on schedule. The guy at Metro said the same thing, but i felt like he was trying to get me off the phone.

A woman I spoke to at the U.S. Embassy said that the strike was not an issue and that visitors will be able to secure transportation from the airport.

On the one hand, you would think that the U.S. Embassy would not lie, but I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the information I was given. The woman at Caribe seemed the most sure of herself. She even took the time to give all the departure times for today from Santiago to the Sosua stop.

I also have a couple of messages into hotels in Sosua to find out what they are experiencing.

Bottom line is everyone has to make their own decision about whether to travel or not travel. I know some guys who are leaving for Sosua today despite the issues. As for me, I'm flying into POP tomorrow as scheduled. I prefer making my own informed decisions than giving in to fear mongering.

We do not issue global warning’s simply because of a few small protest. I saw it was mentioned on here that we are usually late to the party. Yes that’s because we don’t jump to conclusions without facts. Unlike some people on here

OK, I am wrapping up my research. I just contacted my oral surgeon in Santiago, whose office is walking distance from the bus stations. I'll be seeing him next week for more dental implant surgery. I reached his assistant by phone and she told me: "The strike was only yesterday. Everything is getting back to normal now."

I know they would not mislead me because I am spending thousands of dollars there on implants and other work, and I have three appointments set for this trip.

By the way, if you need a great dentist/oral surgeon I highly recommend my guy at Dental Cibao, just a quick stroll from the bus station. Here's the URL:

Now I am going to go back to reading trip reports and staying excited about returning to the Su.

Oh, and one more thing. I am staying in Sosua at Hotel Europa, arriving tomorrow at 2:08 p.m. I called the hotel about the strike, and they said hey no problem, and they would have a taxi waiting for me when I arrive at POP. Anybody on this same flight? We can share the fare into town.

Global warning is not the right terminology.  For travel advisory.  The fact was it was dangerous to travel yesterday on the north coast.  Global warning if you going to lie and sound smart at least say it right. You did say you work for the state department.  I would think you would have the right terminology to share.

Hey @ravi,

Easy to recognize me. I'll be the only guy at the bar outside Europa with these two things:

1. Gray hair
2. A 21-year-old chica in a miniskirt chilling in my arms.

Ha!

Seriously, I'll hit you with my Whatsapp number. Let me know what time you expect to arive at the hotel and I'll have a cold Presidente waiting for you. Be sure to reach out to Andrea at Hotel Europa. She can arrange a taxi for you from either POP or STI.

Looking forward to meeting you. I'll send you my Whatsapp number via private message on this board. Feel free to hit me today if you have a chance.

LOL. More fear mongering. Trust me my brother, I have never risked my life for pussy, and I am not starting now.

Go try to scare somebody who doesn't know any better.
