There are only two ways to go -- via the highway or through the mountains. The mountain route is quicker, but there are cliffs and sharp curves. Driving through the mountains at night is the scariest thing you will ever experience, and that route in the daytime is no piece of cake either.

At night the mountain road is pitch black. There are no street lights to illuminate your view. It's a two-lane road that's narrow as hell. One swerve and you are into the mountain or one of the metal barriers. You shouldn't even consider that route.

When you pick up your car in STI they will give you a map of the highway route. For a newbie, that route is the only way to go. Good luck.

True. The safest route is highway 21 that goes to Cabarete and you would just keep going on that road another 15 minutes to reach Sosua.

Thank Guy I used the search engine but I don’t think anyone has discussed the safest route and name the highway to take high 21? Right

Highway 21 is the only option other than traveling through the mountains. Keep in mind that there isn't an "easy" route from STI to Sosua. Even on highway 21 there are lumbering 18 wheelers and people on mopeds driving without helmets. There is little traditional lighting at night like we see in the U.S. Also, Dominicans drive like crazy, and that can create some anxious moments, especially when they pull out to pass on a two-lane road and flash their lights to let you know they are coming.  My strong advice for you is to remain a defensive driver in the DR until you get acclimated with the traffic flow down there and get a feel for how the Dominicans drive.

Probably too late now, but as a newbie you would be better off flying into Puerto Plata than STI -- and renting a car there if that's what you want to do. The drive from POP into Sosua is easy and safe. It also gives you the opportunity to adjust to the style of driving in the DR before venturing out on longer trips, such as to/from Santiago.

Good luck.

P.S. Why are you renting a car anyway? Everything you're going to need will be within walking distance of your hotel in Sosua. Easy to hire a driver if you want to explore a bit. IJS.

Also: Parking is a hassle in Sousa, meaning what to do with the car if you drive around town becomes an issue.

Personally, I always rent a car because I can't see myself being  dependent on others to facilitate the things I'm going to do when I visit their country. Also, there is plenty of available  parking all over the city. It might not be within the same parking standards as we enjoy in the US, but you can park pretty much anywhere. Enjoy your visit to the DR, where pretty much, the only limiting factor is YOU.

Thank you guys  I am a newbie to the site but I have been to DR 3 times first two trips were Boca Chica and Santo Domingo. Also, being military I have driven in France, Germany, naderlands, Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan. My trip this time will be to Puerto Plata I have a villa and about 20 Chicas lined up some repeats. My last trip to Sosúa I imported 3 Puerto Plata chicas and all picked another chica from the club to do a Happy hour ( they point to what they like and I did the negotiating). Also, plans are to go to kvair, Miami, and accpollco. I really don’t have any plans
On going to Sosúa this time. However, my flight home leaves very late 3 am 23 September and I plan on leaving Puerto Plata in the morning and checking into a room in Santiago to continue mongering until my flight leaves. Moreover, I will upload a trip report on my return. I will be there 18 September -23 September if anybody hitting clubs in Puerto Plata let me know we will do a VIP in Kvair or somewhere. Additionally, all my chicas got plenty friends.

Why drive, time your flights and catch the bus. You get to relax, arrive refreshed and ready. Rental cars are cheaper once you get to Sosua in my opinion. Once you develop a good relationship with a rental person in Sosua youll get better rates and customer service if there is an issue with the car.

I think I have a great relationship with OK Motors...but I can't seem to close the deal with the new chica at the desk.
