@JUST_A_GUY, I feel the same, yea you may save money but the stories i hear 1 to 2 hr ride going and coming ( PAUSE ) plus the flight, cab driver caught a flat or car stop working and know u have to p ay him and his buddy who magically appeared to take you the rest of the way ( SCAM LIKELY ) thats too much in my humble opinion, i always fly straight in to POP, 10 min cab ride and boom let the games begin. Lol im not gona lie the ticket prices do be low but im good, to each his own and get how u live. { "HOLD THAT THING DOWN, AND DONT LET NOTHING, HOLD YOU UP" }

Flying into POP is sweet, no doubt, but when you're trying to fly down 2-3 times a year you sometimes have to cut corners on 1 or 2 of the trips. I just booked on Jet Blue out of Florida for $243 vs over $700 into POP. We all have to make our own decisions.

$243 vs $700 is a helluva price difference though ($457 to be exact), so it's warranted.

I was more referring to if it's a difference of a couple hundred dollars or so.....it just wouldn't be worth the hassle [to me] in the end.

Oh I agree, a cost savings of $400-plus is obviously significant. For a net gain of $200 I wouldn't fly into Santo Domingo. There is also a value to be placed on time, and the four hours each way on the bus wouldn't be worth it to me for just a couple Benjamins. But saving significant money on two shorter trips allows me to splurge for the one big trip when I fly into POPs.

Sometimes you drink fine wine, sometimes you drink cheap beer.

OK, my thing is to look at kayak and google flights, check the one-ways, do this about 60 days in advance, but even a 30 day window is good.
I go into STI often, with the right timing it's very convenient - I save $100-150 then pay $20-25 for the taxi to metro tours, pay $4-5 for a nice bus for 2 hrs. SO my $150 savings is now $120. and I'm very happy.
just be careful of the times. I have saved $200 1way by taking a very late flight out of STI to home, so I read my book and napped for 3+ hours in the airport. but that's great savings !
Leaves me with good savings to invest in my new friends.

Learn the airline points game...  If you reallocated a fraction of the time spent on this site to reading points blogs, you would save a fortune...   I'm sitting on 80K avios, which guarantees almost 6 $150 flights from MIA to POP....  100K southwest which guarantees 10 $150 flights from TPA to PUJ...  etc etc etc....  This isn't just a Florida thing, I've taken advantage of points to RD in northern US...  and you don't need to fly to accumulate points...

It's unreal how everyone bitches about $25 taxi rides, "holding the line" with chicas, and pennies on the exchange rate....  yet they're amost all overpaying by several hundred on flights with no lounge access or other perks....

I booked last week a r/t to POP from NJ for $453 for the beginning of Aug.  I looked on google flights at the time and prices are cheap to POP from now until end of Sep when they start to go up.  I just looked and they are low but there is a spike at the middle to end of August.

If your coming from the midwest flying into sti on delta and then grabbing caribe tours is the way to go. Also check both round trip and one ways. I have in the past saved a ton on 2 one way tickets.

Incredible rates flying out of Florida right now. Jet Blue is flying nonstop from Orlando to Santo Domingo for $268 roundtrip. Yes, you have to get from SDQ to the bus station and then take a bus for four hours. But the thing is, the total travel time is comparable with some more expensive flights. I have a friend who flies from Charlotte to Newark, sleeps in the airport for six hours, and then gets an early morning flight into POP -- for around $700 -- and 10+ hours of total travel time.

I did this in May.

I took an Uber from the airport to Caribe Express in Santo Domingo. It was about $11.

All the best,

JD
Just do it.
