Title: Cell phone and data plans option
Post by: tox20 on March 12, 2018, 09:15:10 PM
I have the option to upgrade US phone but I was curious how easy it is to get a local sim card with data.  I have an unlocked s8 galaxy what sort of options with data would I have for 5 days?

I use a local SIM. Easy to get just bring your passport to the Attice shop and you can get an external box for data packages too if you like.

How much do they charge for sim and data?  Do you have any weblinks to the cell carriers?

I need some advise on this as well.  I was in country a month ago and I left my little Dominican flip phone at a brothel.  I am sure it’s in good hands and being used as the phone number was stenciled on the front of the phone.  I will be back in two weeks and I’ve purchased an unlocked smart phone from amazon.  It’s call a BLU.  My plan is to go to altice and have my old number transferred to the new smart phone.  This time however I want internet access with all the bells and whistles is this doable or do I need to do something else.

Totally doable, I was with one of my local chicas in La Romana, we went to the big plaza with the movie theater in it, after I got my dick sucked half way through the movie lol, we head to Claro office inside the plaza and she switched her number from Claro to Altice which is right accord from them,

No problems whatsoever

Note: for those don't know, Altice own Orange now so there is no more Orange.

I'm not so sure about this. Are we talking about switching a phone number from a U.S. based carrier to a number originating in the DR?

No I have an altice number, I just don’t have the phone anymore.  I just want to add the number with data to this new smart phone I bought cheap.  It’s called a BLU.

If your old phone number was obtained using your passport and is under 30 days since last visit you can claim the phone was stolen and they will blacklist the phone and give you your number if your on prepaid.

After 30 days on non use your number typically goes back into the pool of available numbers.

This is why you should register your number and device with your DR carrier using your passport.

I was always an Orange fan as they gave you a lot of free minutes the longer you were a customer and had the best coverage on the island for me so I am now on Altice as well.

Does that include data?  I'm assuming everyone uses whatsapp so even if I pay for voice and data on my US phone I can still communicate with chicas.

Good news Pidump it will be almost exactly 30 days since I was last in the DR.   I did register my number with Altice with my passport.  Now let’s see if they can add the data as well.   I am also a fan of orange as I had the same DR number with them for years and they did reward loyalty with extra minutes.  I feel like I should be ok but I’ll keep you guys posted.  I am in next Friday after just a month home.

Check out VIVA , they have a trailer in the parking lot in front the bus station on Hwy #5 and Dr. Rosen street . They are new to the area and have the best short term rates right now .

VIVA has been around for years coverage is horrible hence why they are so cheap.

Dance should be no problem then walk in with passport say phone was stolen and they will look you up blacklist the phone and take your number and put into your new phone.

Thing to remember with cellphones in the DR is Orange only has a GSM network so CDMA only phones won't work on their network. Anyone buying a phone be sure to check the bands it supports. CDMA is less used outside the US.

Must have apps for international travel!  Spare phone needed.
Install and setup Google voice, Google hangouts and Google DIALER on PRIMARY phone.   Install and setup a sms forwarding app on your spare phone.

Setup a no answer conditional call forwarding with your cell phone service provider to your Google voice number.
Spare phone needed! (Unlocked and/or GSM)

Before you leave your country.  Install sms forwarding app on a spare phone. Set SMS app to forward all text messages to your Google voice number, on the SPARE phone. Test. Put your primary sim into the spare phone.  Make sure both phones have a data connection and power.  (Wifi or cell service)  Send a text to primary sim.

When you arrive to your destination, buy a tourist sim to install in your primary phone.  Eg. Altrice 5days 200min. 7gb $12  The Google apps works through the data connection.
Pros:  Save money, stay connected with family and customers.  You can keep you primary whatsapp number or switch to a temporary whatsapp number with the new tourist sim.
Cons:  No cell phone service, between the time you leave your spare phone until you install a tourist sim.  Local hotspots will get your through this time.
I use Cricket wireless, spare LG G3 and Moto Z Play as primary

Side note:   Pica-flor had 20+ bitches in our villa two hours after we arrive.   No warning at all!  It was amazing sight. Overall performance as a group was underwhelming, save your money and hold the line at 1500/2000 pesos.

Yeah more information please. I was told by an expat that the phone companies keep track of how many times you activate a new sim and eventually after like 20 times or something they flag your passport and won't allow you to do it again. I don't know if this actually true but it was an American woman who has been living there for quite a long time. She was pretty adamant about it. Either way it would be nice to be able to get a Sim and a plan without having to give them all my info

BLU phones work WORLDWIDE. Great phones indeed.

If your phone is unlocked you can go to Claro / Altice with your passport and $100rd and get a sim. the number is yours but you MUST recharge with minutes, every 90 days so your number is not recycled.

BLU works great guys thanks for all the advice.  An iPhone for less than 100 bucks with all the bells and whistles.  Through a 500 pesos bill in every two months or so on a phone card and I am good to go.  I can even use from the states with WiFi access and a whatsup connect.  A much better option than my  700 dollar Apple 6 plus.
