I liked Colombia. I went by myself a while back to both Cartagena and Medellin. I spent some time in Medellin first and then went to Cartagena. Going to Cartagena after Medellin felt super fucking touristy. There was English everywhere (and way higher prices) and that was off putting a bit as I was trying to level up my Spanish. So do CTG first then MDE.

I would go again.  I didn't bring any jewelry. I brought two phones and left my "better" and bigger phone at the hotel. I took Ubers nearly everywhere but let the cabbies take me to the strip clubs in centro at night (i didn't have any problems). I have "traveler's" Spanish which is enough to do what I have to do (eat, drink, new towels and sheets in the hotel, etc). Google translate, pointing or just saying "no entiendo. mi espanol un poco" was enough for everything else.

The women... goes without saying. They are bad from age 23 to 43. My goodness.

Women aside I don't think Medellin is for everyone though... As stated above, you will need some humility. This isn't back home.

What you mean don't try to stand out too much?? They are going to know you're American and that is stand out in itself!!! I know people that live in Medellin and your comparison is way off..... I'm not saying you can get robbed, but the same rules apply as if you're going to DR!

This isn't entirely true. Depends who you are. If you are white, yea you instantly stand out (and they all look hella gringo-ey). If you are black.... you won't necessarily stick out as much as you would think. I was pleasantly surprised. I was walking around Laureles and it was a good amount of black folk. Clothes and mannerisms might utlimately give you away, but just being afro-something won't.

I thought Medellin would be full of hella light rubias only. That wasn't the case either.

Unrelated... watching American sports on a Spanish broadcast is really cool.

:call ahead! We talk about this as a monger board, but dudes want to pop.  Medellin pops reggaeton clubs be hitting talent similar to jet set, you can break into the groups if you speak Spanish and have that swag.  Barrios off limits for non Spanish speakers you can spit you can get it on the inside.  Metro you can spit you can get it with hot chicks riding on the subway.. pulling out trying Google translate not advisable.. Body tech at 5pm crazy talent you can spit while working out easier to pull than golds gym in Santo Domingo.  no one becomes a star without hard work.  The problem everyone wants to be star, but does not want to learn Spanish and get in shape and put in work.  Good luck...

Laureles is the spot, you can have the high price poblado area. Laureles gives you easy access to Centro also. Just a 10 minute train ride.

Depends on where you boy is, if he is showing you video feeds from Poblado, then all looks good.  I don't think MDE is  a good spot for Simpfest, its too big and spread out.  Plus, you have to find a hotel that will support it. Maybe talk to the owners of the Mansion.

Wow.. Thanks for all the replies and info from different perspectives. I have to say that I felt very safe where I was at. I stayed in poblado right down the block from parque lleras. I did the metro a few times.. I did the cable cars a few times- the two that are finished and they are building 2 more I think. I had my phone out the whole time taking pictures and recording videos.  I went to Mercado del Rio which is like a food court. I traveled basically by the train and cable cars. Didn't use uber at all. My advice to you guys is to go on YouTube and look at some of the videos being posted about parque lleras and la 70. Very informative. They are not blowing up Medellin like dudes are doing sosua. It's more educational which is how it should be.  @nick. I travel somewhere every 2 months. You let me know and I'll roll with you without question. What I have to agree on with everyone is how unsafe it can be If you are really drawing unwanted attention by acting stupid. If you have a mob mentality and you can't be civil and humble then you should stay in sosua. Seriously. This next trip I will be in laureles which doesn't have a lot of tourists. So far it's 2 of us going but I think my boy might not make it. I've paid for the tickets and airbnb so I'm going. Again.. I didn't feel out of place or threatened but I stayed in a tourist area that time. For the person that mentioned the mansion.. I didn't visit there but I'm familiar with it. It's cool for someone who wants to get their feet wet especially if they don't speak Spanish. It's like blackbeards. The chics are there on-site. I know people here that go to Colombia would like to keep Colombia on low because it is paradise for different reasons. You can't beat the casas where you can fuck the baddest chics for $15 to $25 and they are so many of them throughout Medellin. A Colombian told me that 95% of the customers are Colombians not tourists and I believe him because they aren't playing politics there. It's accepted because it's not really out on the open. The casas are basically undetectable unless someone is outside handing out flyers. I mapped out at least 50 of these spots and I still plenty more to map out. It was too overwhelming. So that's why I'm not really concerned about people catching on because it's a very big place and fat more options than the Dominican Republic. Far more.. It's really a party place where everyone parties together including the working chics and the other chics aren't frowning down on them from what I saw. Real talk.. I've been to dr 27 times. If I had went to Colombia first and then Dr I would not have gone back to dr. The Dominican Republic for me was a place to grey my feet wet. That's just me. We all have different comfort zones so... At least try it once. I think you will be very surprised at how easy it will be to leave sosua behind. Lol so those of you that pointed out the dangers I'm not debating you at all. It exist everywhere if you are not on point. You just have to know how to roll which to me wasn't much different than Dr.

@Jamel,
Every guy is over 40 in my group and know how to conduct themselves as gentlemen.
Our minds are made up and we are going in March and again in July for SF5.
So all the scare tactics and what we can and can’t do can cease.... You never know if you don’t try.
And as far as my boy Gator, he’s there with a house full of girls simping.

Two guest friendly hotels I stayed at on my trip:
Poblado: Hotel Torre Poblado
Laureles: Hotel Vivre (killer view)

Ubers are like $3 USD. Poblado sucks because of the traffic around the rush hours. Laureles it wasn't much of an issue.

When i figure out how i'll upload views from my Hotel Vivre.

Hotel Vivre looks nice, are there any tourist type night/dance clubs near the hotel?

If by tourist you mean "english speaking gringos" i would say no, go to Poblado. But it's RIGHT on Carrera 70. Just walk around and you are in the mix. From what I saw, it's where the Colombians go to kick it. The party didn't stop till 5AM. No lie. That's when the music stopped.

I agree with you. Every forum you go on dealing with mongering in other countries, you'll find those type of warnings. I move abroad like I do at home. I don't drink to get drunk so I'm always on point.  I can do march with you guys. Just let me know the dates so I can put them in.
