Natural Afro hair in DR
« on: January 11, 2018, 04:51:06 PM »
I just found this forum and I see that it has tons of information. I been checking the talent of the DR through tinder profiles, and tagged profiles. Dominican women look really good with thick bodies. You can definitely see the West African genes in the shapes of the women. At the same time I was disappointed because all the darker skinned women had weave or relaxed hair. I know most men don't really care about a black women's hair as long as she has a cute face and nice frame, but I'm real big into aesthetics. Black women just don't look right when they wear weave or fry their hair with relaxer. So how many black women do you see actually with their natural Afro hair texture whether Dominican or Haitian when walking the streets of the DR.
A couple examples:

@canibus  Finally in the past 2 years, corporations in the DR have started allowing women to wear their hair natural.  Most DR women still believe that relaxed, straight hair is more formal and should still be worn for business that way.  I prefer natural hair, but most DR women still prefer to relax and straighten their hair.

Weaves...I can't stand them.  They start shedding and leave hair all over the place.  What a mess...

A lot of those DR chicas don't even acknowledge their African heritage.  Its all about their Spain and Taíno ancestry.

If Santo Domingo has a bunch Dominican women wearing natural Afro hair, then I need to start making plans for this year to book a flight.

I agree that they talk more about their Spanish and Taíno history than anything else, even though on average about 70% of DR bloodline is African.

But most of the people I know do not care about the color of your skin.  If they are Dominican, then they think of themselves as being Dominican first and the people I know do not judge based on what color your skin is.

Are their Dominicans that are racist...of course, but the majority think of themselves as Dominicans and they are proud of it.

It's really a shame that the United States categorizes us and makes us think about whether we are white, black, hispanic, asian, etc.  The government trains us as little kids and make us fill this out during school.  I did as a kid anyways.  I don't look at a persons skin color and do not care.  All I care about is if they are a good person or not.

I actually think that the government wants us divide us.  Divided we are weak and the weaker we are the more the government can manipulate us...

I grew up in the 60s. It was the rare black folk that would claim his/her African roots. We went through and enlightenment and things changed though there are still a lot of black folks that are not championing their African ancestry. I look west African and you'd be amazed at the number of black people who after finding out i'm not tell me that they don't like Africans. Dominicans are Dominicans we shouldn't try to force African American attitudes on them. If you don't believe they're a different type of people drop one of them in the middle of the hood and it will be glaringly obvious. If Dominicans were so racists dark skin brothers with African features would only be fucking Haitians.
