Flights to DR
« on: January 04, 2019, 07:21:08 PM »
Gentlemen! This site is entertaining as hell. Have enjoyed the camaraderie and all the intel. Planning to make my first trip to DR (Sosua) in late Feb or March. Looking at the flights it is a big difference flying into Puerta Plata vs Santiago (STI). The price difference is $200 to $350 more flying into Puerta Plata. Is it worth paying the extra for the flight vs getting a taxi or Bus ride from Santo Domingo?

Appreciate any feedback.

Santo Domingo (SDQ) is like a 6 hour bus ride away. I assume you are talking about Santiago (STI), which is only like a 2 hour bus ride away. From what I’ve seen, STI and SDQ usually have similar prices. I can’t really think of a reason to fly into SDQ unless it is significantly cheaper and your are really hard up for cash.

STI on the other hand is worth considering. There is a $20 taxi fare from STI to either the Metro or Caribe bus stations in Santiago. I don’t remember the exact bus fare on Caribe from Santiago to Sosua, but it was something like ~200 pesos (about $4 USD). If you take Caribe, it lets you off a little outside of Sosua in Charamicos. There will be a $5 taxi from Charamicos to most of the main mongering hotels. Metro drops you off right in Sosua.

I would probably cross SDQ off unless you want to spend a day or two  in Santo Domingo before going to Sosua. It’s just too far away. STI be POP is going to come down to this decision: is my money more valuable than my time, or is my time more valuable than my  money.

You are correct STI and not SDQ. Thanks for the info.

For saving 350.00 it is worth it...Like mp3, said there is nothing like being close to the place once you land...But if you do it right you lose no more than 3 hours of your time to save 350.00 for your pocket or extra fun...You have to decide if 300.00 to 350.00 is worth 4 hours of your time.

Land, 20 minute taxi ride to bus station, 2 hour relaxed ride, 5.00 taxi,...You pay 25.00 for cab from pop so that is a wash as far as taxi fare.

For me, i usually use AA through Miami, the flights are about the same price as STI.

The 3 hours for $300 I would probably jump on except... The AA MIA to POP has me in the pool by about 4:00 in the afternoon, and I don't have to get out of it until 1:00PM on the day I leave.

Some of those deep discount fares into STI have brutal arrival/departure times.

I fly out of Newark and have landed in sti and pop sti runs $50 to $100  less but th cab was $90 at sti and $40 at pop but I was going to black beards first so those numbers would be close but the bottom line is cab cost eat up most or all of your savings and drive time is double from sti

I got a flight from JFK to STI for $400. It was that or POP, which was $600. 4 of us on the same flight, so 20$-25$ each for the cab. Santiago is definitely the better fit for us. We'll be in candyland by 2pm.

I live in newark and I will fly from Newark airport to POP via United Airlines.  I paid $353.65.  Total drive to airports From home to EWR, POP to hotel, hotel to POP, and EWR to home.  I would say total drive time of hour and 15 minutes on all 4 trips.  Fare wise to get to these destination cheapest by just taking the bus I would say total $10.  Most expensive I would say $60 via Uber and Taxi.

Even if my airfare was $500 I would rather pay more than travel time in a car.  Last time i paid caround 323 from JFK to POP.  Paid $60 from hone to JFK on uber and on my way back $150 from JFK to home during rush hour.

Take rush hour and travel time into account when deciding which airport you want to travel in.

It is better to fly into STI in the morning. Depending on the day, there can be as much as a 3 hour wait time between getting a bus from the Metro and Caribe tours stations in Santiago to Sosua. Coming in around 1:30 and 2 seems to be a bad time to go to the bus station. I have learned the hard way in the past. I would go on their websites to get the bus schedules.

True but unfortunately for me coming from FLL I have to drive to miami then the flight out of miami to POP is always a minimum of $300 more than flying into Santo Domingo or Santiago from Fort Lauderdale.  I just got a flight to Santiago from FLL for $263 round trip during Super Bowl week.  If I can hook up with someone and share a taxi or give someone $40 towards their rental car like I did my last trip then I'm still ahead even with a minimum $80 ride back to Santiago Airport.  I was doing FLL  to Las Americanas Airport then taxi to Caribe Tours or Metro bus in Santo Domingo then bus to Sosua for 2 years.  I think only recently they made Santiago a daily route or it maybe seasonal.

I have a trip coming up in the spring and may take a return flight out of SDQ, just to try it out. There are some cost savings for sure. In the past I have always hesitated because the entire process kills the whole day. But maybe it will turn out to be a better experience than I thought.
Women need a reason to have sex. Men just need a place. Sosua will do just fine.
