I've mentioned this before on another thread.

There is only 1 reason to get a SIM card while in the DR.  And that is to hide your real phone number.

All you need is an internet connection for the following
1. Wifi is everywhere and if you have Sprint or T-Mobile, data and texting is free.
2. Very few people make phone calls in the DR anyways, they call for free via WhatsApp.
3. Turn airplane mode on, then turn on your Wifi, and you can make free calls to the USA.  And they won't know you are calling from the DR.

Well, some of us are solo entrepreneurs and have to work/make/receive phone calls in between smashes, but yeah, your tips are spot on for basic communication.

@Fuente  You can do that with #3.  You will see your carrier come up on the upper left of your screen.  Once this happens you can make and receive calls to the USA.  Nobody knows I'm in the DR unless I tell them.

Sweet, Bachatero! Some years ago I got into a program offered by Sprint, called "Open World." They have closed it now but it still works for everyone who was grandfathered in. Because of that program, my phone works in the DR just as it does in the USA. There are no extra charges and no one can tell I am out of the country. But as I said, that plan doesn't exist anymore, and your tips are gold for those who have a need to be discreet or save money on their cell while in the Su. Nice work.

Verizon, travel pass. Phone rings just like you were in the US.. It's 10 bucks a day and turn it on before you leave the states.. Three trips with no issues.

Thanks for the information about turning the phone into airplane mode and calling via the Internet. Will your phone ring if you are connected to a wireless Internet connection but are in airplane mode?

@WM  Yes, you phone will ring if you are connected to the Internet via Wifi.  Your phone will function just like it does in the USA.  This works for Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint.  I would assume AT&T works the same, but I haven't tested it yet.
