What's good fellas.  Quick question.
I will be using a Cricket phone.  I looked at the website and it said I would be able to send sms texts or call land line phones.  Just trying to make sure I don't have any issues.
Flying into Santiago.  Flight lands at 2am.  All i need is a good ride to Sosua and Im good!

Wow so it doesn't work over there at all?  Thanks for the info.  That's what I didn't want to do.  Get down there and it doesn't work!

International calling only works if you are calling from the U.S to the Dominican Republic. You are not going to get a signal there nor make or receive calls.Not even if you try to place a call or text over wi-fi. Your best bet is to use whatsapp over wifi or get a extra number from a textfree app and call and text from there on wifi.

@damaja
Yea thatsbwhat I saw too on the website.  International calls gotta be made from the US.
But using WhatsApp over WiFi should be cool.  I found an old Att galaxys4 I used to have.  I'm going to try to buy a sim in dr and use it in that.  Hopefully Claro can unlock it.

Just go to Claro and buy a SIM card for 100  pesos  ($2.30) and put $10 dollars on the account using KEEPCALLING.com or any other site. 150 pesos for everything unlimited for 5 days

My first 6 trips to POP I used Whatsapp on whatever WiFi was available (at BBs for example, at apartments I rented, even most restaurants and many taxis will give you a Wifi password if you ask).
My regular phone is an unlocked one with 2 sim card ports (cheap BLU phone about $100). Still, I never took the time down there to go to Claro or Orange to get a DR sim card.

My 7th trip last month, I happened to have just changed my regular home (US) service to simplemobile. $25/month with unlimited talk and text and 3 GB data (not a ton of data but again I use free WiFi as much as possible). Got to the DR and was able to use my regular phone to call both Dominican numbers and back home to the U.S., as well as use data services. All included in the $25 a month I pay anyway. I would never had thought to enable data roaming if I was not on the "pay as you go plan". I have no idea of the technical reasons why simplemobile works down there, but it does.

@NegroPapi
Yea that's the plan.  That's super cheap too.  Good look on the Keepcalling.com... It's my first trip.  Im flying in to STI.  Imma go to BB for 1 day or so and I see theres a Claro store close.

@Kubrick
Thanks.  That's cool that Simplemobile works both places.  And its super cheap to use here in the US too!
