Sprint 2G Data Good Enough for WhatsApp in DR?
« on: February 10, 2019, 05:59:23 PM »
I'm moving my WhatsApp to a phone I can keep out of sight from the singificant other. Through Sprint I can get unlimited data -- 2G -- on the phone for free. Is this enough speed for basic WhatsApp texting and receiving photos?

When I am in the states I can access Whatsapp on that phone via wifi.

Also, I have another cell and full international line that I will be taking with me to the DR for phone calls back to the states and unlimited international data. But I want to move Whatsapp off that line.

So thanks for any advice on WhatsApp via 2G. My other option is to purchase a cheap unlocked phone and purchase a data sim card in the DR.

Thanks.

2G will be slow but will work. Don't expect to download video quickly but text conversations will be fine. Only problem is is you don't have the app installed you will have to find older versions of whatsapp to install .

Yes

Sprint will have connection in RD “slow one” I mean painfully slow 🤣

Download WhatsApp proir to ur trip and if u want calling and texting  for $0.20

They have that $15 a month roaming package

The good thing about it, if u don’t want to tell anybody u left the country like family or friends or even work,,, they can reach u on ur number and it will not show where on the planet u are 👏🏼

Thanks guys. I think the 2G will work fine for WhatsApp when I am out and about. The other times I'll have Wifi at the room or an establishment.

If you are up for lugging a few extra bits around in the utility belt. get the wifi hotspot from Altice. I have had one a few years now and it works fine and the price drops each time I am there. You can get an unlocked one from Amazon or likely anywhere although i got mine there.

Up to five devices, chicas can use it with you at the beach or the apartment. Yes there is wifi at home and most places we go, but its handy when in the car or out for a walk.

I go to the office and tell them how long i will be there, they open the back type in a few numbers on their phone and tell me its a go in five mins.

This time was three weeks so i asked for a month, I cant remember if they said 400 or 600 but it was only 2 gigs. Then he said I could get two weeks unlimited for $500 (Thank you!).

It was fast enough for facetime, Netflix, at one point i had 4 folks using it, never a speed issue but was a couple of dead zones up El Choco Rd.

I do the same thing with Sprint. It is fine for sending WhatsApp text messages and even the occasional photo. Video chat certainly doesn’t work and you can’t really send or receive videos. Live audio calls via WhatsApp doesn’t really work either.

If you need to for $5 per or $25 per week you can upgrade to much quicker speeds (4G I think). As soon as you land in the DR, Sprint will send you a link via text on how to upgrade to the quicker data package.

I got away with the standard 2G speeds on my last trip. It’s fine for WhatsApp text messages, Google Translate, and loading the occasional webpage. On my prior trip I upgraded one day for $5, and the speeds were not LTE but relatively quick, quick enough to turn my phone into a hotspot and do some quick basic work on my laptop.

If you have both phones with you why not just use your international phone as a hotspot as you have unlimited international data and connect the phone with whatsapp to your main phone service via the hotspot. Then your running full speed data

Hmmm. Never thought about that. Thanks!
