American needs $20 Do you help?
« on: June 08, 2018, 09:06:35 PM »
I ask that question because I was the American. My last trip in April went like shit!! First I find out the hard way my debit card won't work there. Every visit before I took cash and I didn't think to call my card's bank to say I would be using it out of the country, lesson learned the hard way. Second, it's the first time I used AA, normally I use Spirit out of ATL, didn't know they had a baggage fee to come back also. $25 going $30 coming back. Was able to get $500 wired to me for a 5day 4night stay in Sosua, shit gonna be tough. I made it work tho stayed at Europa for the first time, $168 for 4 nights and I was able to play with 5 chicas with 2 TLN so it wasn't that bad. Shit got crazy on my to get home, I had $36usd and almost 200pesos. $25 for the taxi to the airport leaves $11 and then I find out about the $30 return bag fare. Shiiittt!!! What am I gonna do? I see 2 brothers, I ask are they flying into Charlotte and they said they were. So I explain my dilemma to them and offer to let them hold my Gold chain and Cross medallion for $20 til we get there and I straighten out my card. They said "we fucked up too" to wit I knew they thought I was running game. First: If an American is out of the country trying to run game for $20 then I will fall for it because I don't mind helping people if I can. Second: If someone offers you something of much greater value then what they're asking for, then maybe they are in trouble. Third and final: Shout out to Rene the taxi driver, cause this man drove back to the airport to loan me $20 to get my bags back home with me. I got to Charlotte and got my card straight, seen those 2 nicca's walking to another gate and wanted to show them I wasn't running game, but instead said to myself " Fuck them Nicca's". Sent Rene $50 the next day and he sent me a few naked pics of some bad bitches to meet on my return in September. I wrote all that to say every Nicca ain't about gaming on people, especially when you're in another country. If a Nicca can't afford $20 what the fuck you doing away from home? I'm Just Sayin

You could have Western Union yourself some money using WI-FI on the WU app. 5 days was enough time to make it to Western Union.

@OP I'd definitely help if I was around...yeah there are times people take advantage of others but $20 ain't something I'll sweat about

All you have to do is call your bank to confirm and explain your situation.

Glad everything worked out fine. You hate to do it, but sometimes you have to think about the worst possible scenarios when traveling abroad. Sending money to yourself by Wu is great advice.

I once had a ATM machine eat up my card. Luckly I only had one more day. If that had happened earlier in my trip, I would have been fucked. I always called my bank ahead of time. I learned my lesson before trying to check into a hotel in Florida and card kept getting declined. Their explanation for the decline was that I had used my card at a restaurant in JFK 3 hours ago and now I am in checking into a hotel in Florida....idiots I tell you.

@ deepdiver, I did have $500 wired to me from a family member  @CatchaFiyah..... I had worldwide calling put on my phone before I left so I could make calls to the US. I called the debit card support line when I first found out it didn't work and for whatever reason the call would go busy when I'd called. My job and this debit card shit fucked up my ball out. The worst part was having to stay at the Europa and those damn moto conchos all day and night and somebody had a damn baby 2 rooms away. Never again.

Yes of course.. I've never been in a position to help out someone from the US that needed it but one time for a Brit in Medellin that had his wallet stolen.

I sounds like you dropped the ball a few time why would you leave the states without cash in hand and why not pay for a place to lay your head before you get there. Just asking.
I had a couple of brothers help me out of a problem before I rented a scooter and was supposed to get a ride to airport from the owner but his shop was closed my phone didn't work in the street of Sosua but saw a couple of brothers they let me use their phone to call dude no problem. I don't know if I would give a dude $20 to many people asking for money. The hold my chain was a big scam in NY many years ago.
I always bring double the money I think I will need plus credit card and notify them where I'll be. Protect your neck

thanks for sharing this experience man...good shit...it happens more often that you think there people just ashamed to tell.....like @starlord suggested try to split your money on different cards also bring some cash on you and always ...especially when traveling to third world countries tell your bank so they know how long you'll be out ....there is a lot of skimming in the dr ....they hold your card to protect you from this.....good post!!

As a Spirit traveler you certainly should be aware of bag fees. lol

Always good to know the rules of the airline you are flying.

But for a 4 day trip you might want to consider carrying on unless you bought the el cheapo basic economy ticket at which point you should have known there would be bag fees.

Always contact your bank before going to another country but a call to them while there probably would have cleared up the problem for you anyway.

Not traveling with any reserve cash for emergency purposes is not to smart as I am sure you figured out.

Rookie mistakes but I am sure you learned from them

I used to live in a city core, i have not seen it all, but i have seen a few scams. If someone approached me on the street and needed $20? Unlikely.... Unlikely is not the right word... No is a better word.

Someone at the airport, in that situation? Yeah I would help that person.

They now include the exit fee at Havana but it used to be $25CUC. I was sitting airside in the departure lounge with a friend who is a regular on the route and the counter clerk came in past security to find him.

A young American girl ( like maybe 20, a student) travelling on her own had done the budget down to the quick and did not know about the fee. Airline clerk tells my buddy the situation and he pulls out the $25 for him to give to her. He says the clerks know him and it has happened before.

Now on the plane this obviously distraught young girl gets on calling his name, she was convinced they were not going to let her leave, and was asking repeatedly for his info so she can repay him. He says not to worry and to just take care of someone who needs a hand one day.

I could tell she will never forget that.

This debit card thing has me thinking now. I get a call from the bank yesterday afternoon my card has been compromised and cancelled. I race to the branch, and they have no info on why. No odd transactions. I was going to use that account because that is the one I know works in DR. They will replace the card on Tuesday, i am flying tomorrow.

So if you see me on a moto instead of in the car, at Hotel Europa instead of Ahnvee, and Bar Central instead of Pica Flor.... Help a guy out and slide me a $20!
