Title: Car accident info
Post by: danceelite0 on January 02, 2019, 10:06:16 AM
Ok guys a vet here the Danceman needs info.  I rented a really nice SUV from a solo owner rental car company in santo domingo.  The car was damaged fairly extensively.  Ahmet refused to take the police report because they didn’t believe how the damage was done.  The rental car owner was there with me at Ahmet.  They had pulled some illegal action on me originally he took me to the airport and turned me over to one of his buddy Cestur cops who took my passport and they refused to let leave the country without the accident report.  Well after Ahmet refused to take the report I was taken back to the airport and booked on a later flight.  Dude had me verbally promise to send him 500 bucks WU when I got back home.  I had already given him 500 bills hopelly to cover the deductible.  I had no intention of giving him more and when I got home I didn’t send him a dime.  My question is this, I am coming in for the super bowel as I do every year.  Am I going to have a problem entering the country at customs when I come in or will I be detained when I am trying to leave?    I could use some experienced help here and I also know personally a rental company owner who I will reach to for his input.

I really can't comment on your situation, but renting and driving a car in the DR is not that bad.  In all seriousness, you won't be scammed like that with US Car Rental agencies like Hertz, Avis, Budget, National...etc. Sure, they all want to stick you for additional insurance costs...but we all know that, because we all want to avoid those additional costs.  That said, we all know that driving in the DR is challenging. The odds are that you'll be fine 95% of the time...but there's always that 5% that can get you.

PS - I always rent a car in the DR and I always will because being able to see the entire coast, campos, cities or mountains when I visit is totally worth the "insured" risk.

Met a guy who simply stopped at an accident to see  if everyone was ok, and he was cited as being at-fault for it... shit aint no joke, but theres alot of grey areas about the insurance coverages that no one seems to understand.. until i get a guarantee as to the coverages like here in the states. I wouldnt step foot behind the wheel..

I wouldn't worry about it. You would be like a needle in a haystack to them. I would fly in from a different airport. Punta Cana is only 2hrs away and I am sure those people are not looking for your 500. I do not have any local places you can rent a vehicle from, but if you strike up a convo with the dudes who work at Budget/Thrifty (soon as you clear customs), those guys know somebody that has a local rent a vehicle shop. Good luck.

I wouldn't rent a car period, unless you want to go thru the same shit as before!! It's just not worth the risk.... when you can have a local drive for you.

Yes I’ve been renting cars in the DR since 2004 I am never there without one, not having a car is not an optio.  The country is just too big, and I don’t scare easily.  This is my second accident in 15 years the first was with a budget rental and I totally the car in SD and with full coverage I paid nothing.   I was almost living there at the time and I did have to make three court appearances before the case was thrown.  I paid little to nothing.  Budget even covered the lawyers fee, though dude still burned me for about a 50buck propina.  This current accident happened about three weeks ago and yes I am flying into POP as opposed to SDQ where I had the problems before.  I just don’t know if the rental car owner has the ability to file some capture order in I attempt to return to the country.  I don’t intend to send him a dime and I am coming back for the super bowel. I will have his 5 bills with me but I will only pay if I am forced to.  I’ve given this dude 7 bills for a 2day rental, I feel he has already been well compensated if he didn’t insure his car then that should be on him.  The damn car was parked.

No he could be right.  For the board, never stop at an accident in the DR.  I know this is some cold shit, but if an injury takes place and you as a gringo you are just driving by and stop and you cannot fully communicate in Spanish and have stopped you could be blamed.   Even though you had nothing to do with the accident. That scenario has happened to gringos before.  Its the DR.  Anything can happen.

I was stopped from flying out of POP a few yrs ago and was forced to go all the way to Santo Domingo to clear my name. It was a case of mistaken identity but till this day I still have to carry this document they've given me in SDQ because I still get stopped at the airport. From that experience here is what I know.

1- They can simply put you on their version of no-fly list simply with your first and last name. That's how I was prevented from flying out. They had no other information on the guy they're really looking for except his first and last name.

2- Someone will need a court order (e.g. owner of the car) to prevent you from flying. He'll then submit that order to the Migration office in Santo Domingo and you'll be prevented from flying out.

3- Punta Cana is not connected to the rest of their systems so if you do get stopped you can probably head to Punta Cana and fly out from there. However, you're better off resolving the matter with the car owner instead, probably ends up being cheaper.

4- If you do end up resolving the issue with the car owner do realize that the issue will then need to be cleared with the Migration office so that you're removed from the list, don't simply hand over money to him.

Lets hope you're not on the list because whether you resolve the issue with the car owner or flee to Punta Cana it'll still be an expensive lesson.

Been through it and seen others go through it. If they can claim you owe them money and go to the fiscal and have the courts issue a judgement you will have an impediment de salida put on you. Once they had your passport they have your information . As mentioned if you do rectify the situation by any means you will want and need paperwork from the rental company saying all damages have been paid.

If not I am not sure on the Punta Cana airport not being connected so I can't comment on that but they will hold you up at immigration and make you settle things before you leave.

I never will rent a car in the DR. The small savings each time isn;t worth the headaches it can bring. Your lucky nobody was hurt or the case needs to be settled before you leave.

As a gringo your paying. If theres an accident your getting the blame. I know its against common sense and being a good person but if your in an accident in the DR it is not worse to leave and get caught later. There is no difference if your caught there or days later. If your not caught you pay property damage only. If theres human damages or even a death good luck. Better to use public transportation or hire a driver.

Before paying I would ask for a copy of the bills and all related documents to see if they have put impediment de salida on you. If not ask before paying. Then have a copy of payment and even ask for a paid receipt. You might not get a final paid receipt but you can wave the option of no more rentals and your coming soon back to sweeten the offer. Best advise I can give.

All this garbage does bother me and I ve been renting cars there for 15 years.  When I stayed there I rented a car from budget the entire year. I paid in encrements of 3 must have been over 3 grand each time. I’ll get through this as well and I am sure I won’t stop having a car.  However full insurance is a must.

Fuck renting a car, why deal with the bullshit!!
Title: Re: Car accident info
Post by: danceelite0 on January 03, 2019, 08:24:32 AM
Ok Starlord maybe I wasn’t specific enough!  This accident was no real accident at all something very large hit the front of the automobile while it was parked.  I was in Boca Chica having a fish dinner with my X wife and her niece.  We came back to the car and discovered  the damages.  Now the rental car owner and Cestur the tourist police took me back to the seen and verified that I had been there with people who were still there the next day.  They didn’t say or see who damaged the vehicle but the owner and the cop was now convinced I wasn’t bullshitting them.  However Ahmet didn’t believe how the damage occurred and wouldn’t take a police report.  The owner decided that he would go downtown and change to story to he ran into the back of someone, damaged the car in order to get a police report to give to the insurance company.

I have been hearing don’t rent a car from naysayers for years.  There are risk and rewards for everything you do in life.  Like I send I’ve been renting car there since 2004  so far just two accidents and a key scratch from some knucklehead who I refused to pay for watching the car while parked.  He got smacked in the mouth and I paid 1000 pesos to the rental company.  The rewards have been outstanding.  I am 67 in 11 days I have been everywhere on that Island 22 cities and counting.  I am an avid golfer I’ve played most of the golf courses on the Island.  I’ve got friends all over I may pick one up to go to a golf course play hang out afterwards. Chase some women, hang at a pool hall.  With you own transportation your options are limitless.  Get out of your own way and step away from Sosua for a minute where all you can do is chase ass.  For example when I am in Sosua the is a little Mexican restaurant with a menu identical to chipotle.  It’s right at the beginning of caberete I am a fan of chipotle being single I must eat there two or three times a month.

@Dance  I hope you are doing well bro!  My guess is that you will be fine because you have a valid Police Report.  I would take that with you when you go to the DR.  That does not stop the guy from trying to create a civil case against you though.  I really don't know the laws there so I'm not sure if they would stop you for a civil case.

If you want, I can ask the cousin that is an DA in Santo Domingo.  He actually got promoted a few months ago and now has a new position over the entire city of Santo Domingo.  With this new position I think he could answer any question you would have.

His first question to you will be "did you have insurance?"

Title: Re: Car accident info
Post by: danceelite0 on January 03, 2019, 11:26:58 AM
I did have insurance as I have all the related paperwork.  You are the man Bach you even own an auto there.  I rented one from budget for a whole year.  Cost me 9 grand my X bugged me to death saying I wasted all that dough I could have bought a car.  But getting a car through that registration process and titled and tagged wasn’t worth the hassle.  If your find can find out if they put me on this imepidia de salida list I would be greatly appreciative.

Only rent in an airport and take all the coverages. Note any damage on vehicle and take photos to document time and date. Dominicans are addicted to scamming and running cons.

As Long as your NOT going to be in THE same Area as the rental guy/spot. I wouldnt worry.. BUT, Make sure they dont know your travel plans.
Worst case is they take your passport info to the fiscalia and say you ran on the bill.  9 times out of 10 if they dont know how you move they wont waste the time and take off with the money they already got from you.

If it was THAT real they wouldnt have let you get on the plane

Wow just got VP KEEP IT MOVING,  if you are able that is damn good advice.  Most dominacans aren’t paying auto insurance anyway and don’t want the cops on the seen.  That’s why I. A minor accident they roll out.  I’ve seen this and now after two accidents I see why!
Title: Re: Car accident info
Post by: PMIdump on January 09, 2019, 05:44:18 PM
Yep even with injuries keep it moving. There is no difference if you get caught later. I found this very strange because in the US you leave an accident with injuries you have big problems. In the DR they all do it and if some motoconch jumps in front of you and gets hit hes going to claim injuries and want his moto fixed. It will always be your fault being a tourist and it will cost.

Also anytime there is injury or even claim of injury they keep you until the case is settled.

I will never drive in the DR.

@SL  If they don't ask for your license, then I wouldn't rent from them.  They should make a copy of your passport and license, but they should give both of them back to you.  I pay with my American Express card because it automatically has insurance when renting a car.  This way I have a backup if I ever need it.
Title: Re: Car accident info
Post by: danceelite0 on January 16, 2019, 11:55:53 AM
Yes every Dominican rental car agency will require your license and passport, unless you have a Dominican drivers license.  Then it’s license only they will charge extra for a day rental if you can get them to do it.  90% won’t rent just for the day usually a two day minimum.  I am going to get an American Express card that’s a huge benifit driving in the DR.

Title: Re: Car accident info
Post by: danceelite0 on January 16, 2019, 02:17:50 PM
You might as well skip the expenditure on the insurance.  They may than likely won’t notice the expiration date on your license, but any accident and they will go thru everything with a fine tooth comb.  They won’t miss that expiration date and your insurance will go null and void.  Ahmet will charge you with driving without a license even if you are not at fault.  If you do do this and I don’t recommend it.  Avoid Ahmet at all cost wear your seat belt and don’t park illegally.  If they do get you don’t show them that expired license. Tell them you don’t have your wallet and let them take the car if it comes to that.  You can send the  rental company to retrieve the car you will still have to pay towing cost and ticket.   But that’s better than driving without a license.  However if there is any way possible get your license renewed if way safer.

Starlord ahmet wears the green police uniforms.  They are your traffic police,  they don’t drive cars for the most part except in Santo Domingo.  They hang out on the road at stop lights looking for illegal turns and folks not wearing seat belts.  They are also responsible fot parking violations and they will tow your car away.

Starlord I am a daredevil as well and I would risk it too.  However the prudent thing to do is renew that license.  I have had two accidents in the DR and I am damn glad my license was good at the time.  I have had an accident here in the states years ago I had not paid a ticket, license was suspended, chic was at fault, no matter I went to jail overnight.  I met Jesse Jackson that evening, he was in jail for demonstrating at the South African embassy.  By the time we went to court the judge and her lawyer were trying to pin that accident on me.  We ended in a draw I paid for my car and she paid for hers.  No license is misery of you get caught.
