My dumb ass was driving the wrong way up Pedro Clisante down by Europa one night a few years ago. Made the right past Villa Flor once I realized what I was doing, but a cop was coming down past city lights and saw me as I was turning. Pulled me over and hit me with the “you know das like $500 ticke in you cuntri papi... 👀” wanted no problems and I knew I fucked up so I have him 1000 pesos. Then he says “and what about my partner?” ..gave him another 1000 and he let me go.

Moral of the story? Keep smaller bills on you. I’m sure he would have let me go with 500 a piece.

Not sure if that’s considered a shake down though, being that I was actually in the wrong.

It's a shakedown because they are only stopping you to obtain some of your "gringo" excess money supply.

I think I need to point some things out my guys

Y’all need to know the difference between a police officer “dressed in military style with a machine gun 🔫”  and what they call Amit “wearing all green without a gun”

Only the Amit will write u a ticket, and they operate from 6am to 6pm ONLY

the rest u see driving around in a moto 🏍 “always Two officers” those are POLICIA  and they DO NOT write traffic tickets lol

Notice how at night, almost all motorcitos do not wear their helmets anymore, while in the day some do,,, because there isn’t any Amit to give citations after 6pm

I am surprised nobody spoke about the difference,,, where u at @VP 🤣 too busy with YouTube I see

I got pulled over a couple of years ago for a dirty back window by police in a pick up truck. That cost me 1000 peso because that's the smallest thing I had. It seem like I get pulled over once a year.

I've been told that also, as i'm sure a few others here have also.  If they can't write tickets, can they jam you up in another way?....(i.e. can they call somebody?, etc?).

This is the thing.....if they do stop you, are you going to challenge them?  And if you do, how exactly do you go about doing so?  Give an example.

Fortunately i haven't been pulled over yet.

I have been pulled over by two policia on a moped. They threatened me with a ticket...so I paid them off. I didn't challenge them and if I knew they couldn't write tickets...I would still pay them just to avoid time lost or any potentialfuckery that might arise.

Ya I haven’t had any interactions with the police but I sure as hell am not going to haggle with them on my vacation in a foreign country where he holds all the cards and I very well may have no rights at all. If it takes 500-1000 pesos to keep me moving along, I’m paying it and moving along no questions asked.

I understand those with better Spanish or those who are there longer term might feel differently, but as someone who only speaks basic Spanish and is there only 5-10 days a year, I ain’t fucking with 3rd world cops.

Exactly my point.  Hell how do i know he won't call up one of his police homies that actually CAN write tickets.  Now i gotta pay ALL them crooked mfs.  Lol

Nobody will write you a ticket after 6pm

I thought I was clear about that lol

Now of course if u get pulled over by those policías,,, just throw about 300 their way as I mentioned earlier,,,, nobody is telling y’all to argue with them,,, just know whatever they tryna scare u with “I have to write u a ticket” is pig shit lol

I know some Spanish, so I be arguing with them like a stupid and they just give up,, other times I just give them something,,,, depends how I feel for the day

Besides I don’t get harassed that much,,, a handful of times since I start visiting RD “over 20 trips” in 3 years,,, I blend in so they don’t bother me much

Yeah you were clear.....but neither of us mentioned 6pm, so it had nothing to do with our comments.

Your original comment just mentions that they can't write tickets.  What i was gettin at was what if (let's say between the hrs of 6am and 6pm) one of em pulled you over anyway, but tried some other shady shit....then what?

But like you said....either way, you're gonna have to pay, unless you can get away with it.  Good info.

Nah, driving is ok.

I'll happily pay a few hundred pesos (or a lil more) rather than the price of a taxi any day.

This guy got pulled over in IN THE BACK OF AN UBER 😂. They ran his pockets and told him to give them 500 pesos.

So, driving or not, moral of the story is to carry smaller bills lol

What if I rent a car and hit one of those crazy moto dudes and he gets hurt? If it's his fault, they will just let me leave, right?
Title: Re: Policia in Sosua ...

Nope. It's your fault. Bigger pockets will always be at fault. Drive slowly, cautiously and yield the right of way...even at the expense of time.

You hit someone there and your life is basically fucked.

Doesn't matter if it was your fault or not you will very likely go to jail until it all get's sorted out and it's going to cost you a pretty penny to get yourself out of trouble

Renting in the DR is no big deal but if you get into an accident it becomes a huge deal immediately.

If you get into an accident where no one is hurt best to get out of there before the policia shows up.

The risk is real for those that chose to drive in the DR no matter what some may say just make sure you totally understand the risk before getting behind the wheel there

If you are going to drive in the DR always keep 10,000 to 15,000 pesos on you. To answer your question, if you hit one of the moto dudes and he suffers some cuts and scratches, then you should apologize on the spot and offer him 10,000 pesos to take care of his injuries. It's not like the states where the police officer will come out, talk to both parties and decide who's at fault. If you hit a moto guy it is going to be your fault.

Keep pesos on you and try to settle any traffic dispute before the policia get involved. If the policia get involved, you will still end up paying the moto dude, and you'll likely have to bribe the cops as well.

Welcome to the DR.

Don't get TOO discouraged though.  I used to didn't get a car, but now i always get one, because i'm always going back and forth between Sosua, Puerto Plata, and Cabarete throughout the duration of my trips.  And it's allowed me to venture out and see different things (clubs/bars/sporting events/monuments/restaurants/etc) without the hassle of paying for a taxi each time.  And it gets easier each time.  And i tell you, it makes things a helluva lot more convenient.

TomBrady. Good job. Cancel that shit. I use to drive over there never got into anything but I was stopped broad day light and received a ticket for no seat belt. Yeah driving is more convenient over there with a high risk tag mark. Ill pay my way around in taxis for what its worth.
