Corona March trip report March 16/23
« on: March 26, 2020, 05:19:37 PM »
Hello guys, I came back from Sosua 3 days ago. Trip from monday March 16 to monday 23.
I started planing my trip in January 2020. Most my favor hotel spot were full Sosua inn, terra linda, casa valeria.
I finally did 3 different bookings to get the full week at casa valeria.

Corana virus noise started to get louder 1 week before my trip. Canadian government gave warnings to citizen to avoid traveling few days before my departure. I made my research and decided that the risque was low for a short trip and I had the feeling that the year will be propbably lost due to the crisis. Things were changing so fast that I was not sure if my fight will be cancelled.
12 hours before my trip I got a call from my boss to confirm if I am still travelling. Since I said yes, I got told to quarantine for 14 days when I am back.
I have enough time off paid for 2 months so I said all is good. Few hours later I got an email from my union  stating all non essential public servant are off for 3 weeks with full pay. All good again.
March 16  The airport was almost empty and took just 5 minutes to clear customs and also got VIP service from flight crew. The plane capacity was 430 with only 15 customers on board.
POP airport was as usual.

I went out monday night to wednesday. Bar marengue was not full but busy. The ratio was 1 to 5 from 10 pm to 12.
Monday night Classico ratio went up 1 to 10 and same for the casino. I took enough numbers to line up for the week.
Tuesday my date cancelled and left early the town so I just picked another from merengue. The best pick of the week.
By  Wednesday afternoon all my line up cancelled due to the shut down. Most girls left the town by wednesday night due to midnight Public transportation shut down. That night I chilled with 2 girls from Haiti and went to 3 bars on the strip  that I never tried before. Mostly older white men spot. Everything else was closed. It was fun. The strip closed early midnight or 1 am.
Thursday morning I got up and my tinder was blowing up. I got 37 hit and messages. So since all bars and restaurant are closed the hunt swiched to online. I made my choice on a 27 year old from from cabarete. She was a great pick and wifed her up for the remaining 3 days of my trip to cut down the risque of Corona virus. The less people you meet the better.

The last few days there was only 2 customers staying at the casa valeria hotel. Owner kept the restaurant open for us. There was a curfew starting at 8 pm so we had to order before 7 pm to let staff go home on time. Curfew started Thursday march 19 and hit hard the restaurant.
The beach was open but no restaurant/bar. Mostly saw few white tourists at the beach.
The last few days I chilled in door in my room and pool area with my guess. Internet, sex, food, alcohol was on deck.
I felt that I was in paradise while the world was going creasy.

I gave more tips to the staff than usual to help them. All staff got laid off this week since there are no customers.
I noticed beggar are starting to become more aggressive for money. No many tourists walking around.
Business owners are starting to get worry for safety.
Home owner from cabarete told me that they had already few break in their area the last 24 hrs.
All tourist already left or about to leave the country.

I made the best of my trip. I came back home safe relaxed with  money in my pocket.
Wishing the best for Sosua during this tough time.
No signs of corona virus :)

The airport experience was ok.

The only problem was everybody show up very early. I was there 4 hours in advance.
Long unnecessary line up but moved fast once the flight ahead was cleared.
I got asked few extra question such as if I was sick with fever and cough.

There were no too many flights so that helped a lot to keep things move smooth.
There was 3 empty available spots so the crew made sure to pick up a couple with a baby before leaving.
Back in Canada, I signed a paper to quarantine for 14 days.

Good report Bro. My flight to PoP was the morning of the March 19th. I had my annual physical the Friday before (the 13th) and asked my doctor should I fly/travel internationally with all the Corona shit going on and he looked me in my eyes and said "no". My dick has never ran my life so I called JetBlue as soon as I got home spent two hours on hold trying to get through and canceled when I finally did (issued a full credit). To each his own but I wasn't chancing it. I'll reschedule for mid/late July cause I think this shit will last through June.

bospat15, yes DR airport were closed but only for inbound.
Airport closure started at middle of my trip.
I was not worried because I knew it takes several weeks to evacuate several thousand people.
Long  stay will be another story for sure.
My only surprise in my calculation was that I was expecting DR government to be slow and shut down things around March 30.

Airport was open only for evacuation  purpose.
I was surprised that the average age of the people in my fight was over 50.
A lot of home owners seniors with some over age 70.

I think safety will be an issue soon in DR.
No safety net in place.
Expect robbery/crime to increase soon.
