I know about the FX rate.i want to know actual exchange rate on street.

Generally, any of the exchangers in buildings will give you a rate very close to the actual rate (less than 1%).

When I was there the fixed rate was 45.20 and I got 45.

The guys operating in the huts will usually take 2% off the fixed... $44

Exactly...by the Orange store.  They pretty much give you the going fixed rate!  When I was there in 2015 45.20 was the rate.  When you were there it was higher.

Concluding...they don't charge much (less than 1%) in Sosua when it comes to exchanging money.  The street guys will make a little more money, but that's understandable.  Definitely either of those are much better than the airports.

If anyone flies through SDQ, you can exchange cash for pesos right where you get your luggage.  I got 46 pesos for $1 a few weeks ago at BHD Banco where I was waiting for my luggage.  It is the same rate that you get outside of the airport.

Stay away from the non-bank exchange companies that are inside the airport though as they will give you a terrible exchange rate.

46 is still the rate.  Go to the banco poplar in santo domingo or in santiago.

3 weeks ago it was 46.2 at that guy with the flapping bills outside the Orange store.

Question- do you know if he would take Canadian cash?  Going back in a few weeks.  Last time we converted from Canadian to USD at a bank in Canada, then pesos.  Losing a bit on each exchange

Interestingly, FWIW last year they wouldn't take USD in Santa Marta Colombia. Almost anywhere in the world you can use USD. Nor were there many ATMs around.  BUT they ALL had chip cards.  Took me months to figure it out.  Watched a lot of Narcos.  USD cash from Colombia often would be dealt with a drug money needing laundering.

Do not exchange in airport at POP, rate showing 47.33 today so should get over 47 at most cambios in Sosua

The exchange inside the airport at POP will be at least 5 points less than what you see at the true market rate, outside on the street will likely be about 2-3 points better... Just wait till you get settled to go find some cash. The taxi quotes in USD, your hotel will expect to be paid in USD. Find the spot that works for you and change some money before you head out. Plenty advice on here about the "best" place. POP airport just happens to be the worst. Not including the guys who short change you.
