Be black a go there. It's strictly a Brit place, they give you the attitude of why aren't you at Rumba's or Flip's

I’ve eaten at Jolly Rogers years ago, along with another Brit spot called Brittanias which is now called Matteo’s and I never encountered any form of racism.

I ate there within the last year or so. We ate and drank while sitting at the bar. Actually it was the best customer service I've ever had in Sosua. I assume Patti was the wife (sweet, pretty lil thing about late 40s early 50s) who owned the place with her husband. She greeted us and ask if everything was ok - even chatted with us some.

This right here is why you can't trust it when reports come out about dimes being in Sosua ain't nothing pretty about her just an old white woman but a certain type of dude is just thirsty.

The couple that own Jolly are Canadian, and very nice people. They have had the place for about 15 years now and treat their customers well, the brought a style of customer service from Canada never seen in DR then. They are both from small towns in Ontario, they are NOT racist, but will ask you to leave if you are an ass whole. White or black.

I've never had issues there or at Matteo's, which I've read accusations of him (not on here ) but on a YouTube short in the comments of being racist, which from my experience is not the case. In fact he's been nothing but respectful to me when I have eaten there or when I saw him out in town walking. Additionally I was there one evening and ended up shooting the shit with a table full of white guys from Canada for a couple of hours. The same with Danny's old spot and others where the patrons are mostly if not all white. I think no owner worth their salt will tolerate a hostile atmosphere like that.

Racism and bigotry are similar, yet different. Jolly Rogers is weird at times. Never felt’s unwanted, but definitely felt at the bottom totem pole of priorities before. Like I sat down and waited a significant amount of time(over 10 minutes I counted wondering wtf) and wasn’t attended to. I had to walk to the bar/kitchen to ask for a menu myself, already annoyed and slightly frustrated and disappointed. Indifference and/or aloofness towards me, and feeling like bad customer service may have me feeling like “if I were European I wouldn’t be dealing with this ish, do you think I randomly sat down purely to window shop?” So I definitely can see where feelings of racism can come from.

I’ve never ate at fat/slim Jesse but since my last visit in march im more open to trying them out, vs prioritizing Jolly. I do Jolly’s before Rumbas and Bailee’s regardless and I like the careless payment without the crazy added on taxes that Rumbas will do jumping my bill 28%. Similar to how I felt about waterfront and parts of ZC. I’m not in an establishment for ambiance but to get food. If I’m not attended to within 10 minutes, I’m going to feel unwanted. Don’t pander and fake kiss my ass, but if I feel I’m getting ignored or bad service, that’s how I feel. I can look at my arrival time and compare it to the current time, and how frequently other tables are being checked on. When I eat with older guys generally it’s better service than eating solo or with someone else 35 or younger. I assume they prioritize older/expats vs what they assume are randoms in DR/Sosua.

We all know most service in the DR is slow, like dead slow clutch ahead no hurry, f--k it ill do it tommorro attitude, im not saying your gonna get service like an asian wendys as there throw your burgers and fries at you as you go through the drive through, your on caribean time nothing happens in a hurry, there are only a few thinngs in the DR that a fast quick prompt ! when a rachet hoe on PC gets you back to the hotel its lechie papi! you nut she splashes her box with a cup of water and out the door, like a magic show when she disppears like houdini, the only other quick or fast things are chicas calling for WU money and certain taxi drivers speeding  to get you dropped of to get an other fare,,so good service in the DR is a plus as far as food and beverage !

The owners are Canadian and not Europeans. If you mean white, just say white.

And if you want to complain about slow service, try Pirate Bay. There you wait almost two hours to get your food no matter how you look or where you’re from. It’s crazy and even more crazy is that the place usually has plenty of people in there! All waiting for their food of course 🤣

Hell Yeah !

Jolly Roger and Mateo are up for sale.  Maybe an investment opportunity.  Is there a list of black owned restaurants in Sosua?

Devray (Kings/Rumba),  Flip Flop, Chicken in Waffle, and not sure how many are on the beach.

Make dollars spend pesos. A bar or restaurant is not a great investment in DR, unless all the stars line up for you. You can count on one hand the number of successful (profitable) bars/restaurants on the street. Use your other hand if you want to include the beach.

I am sure if Matteo was making a living he would fight it out. Jolly Roger, they are just done, 15 years is a long time to keep going. Most spots operate under the guise of a business, the operators are really just self employed.

There are plenty of empty spaces around and places open and close under new names/ownerships on a regular basis.
