CMC
« on: January 12, 2021, 07:15:14 PM »
In the last years, I heard lots of sob stories about the Cabarete Medical Center (CMC) just past super pola going to Cabarete.
Here's one I just saw on a sosua group on FB ... I tought you guys might want to know before going there for medical care.
I copied his original text. Be careful fellow mongers.

Writing this is a burden. I am writing out of frustration. On January 7th, Thursday last week I went to CMC the private hospital in Sosua, to see a Doctor about my coughing. I was given an 8.5 by 11 printed invoice to pay. I paid the $500 pesos. As I walked away from the cashier I noticed that the invoice very clearly stated:
Palic ( my insurance) pays $500 pesos.  Patiente pays $100 pesos.
That is the correct division of costs. Palic pays 80%. I took it back to the cashier for a refund. No way. I went to the front desk. They took the invoice, my only copy of it, away and put it under the desk shelf. For the next hour I begged them for a copy or at least a chance to take a photo of it. I was refused over and over. I asked why? No answer given. Security was called. I was escorted out. Before that they hand wrote me a useless invoice, which at least proves I paid the $500 but made no mention of the Palic Account number, transaction number, date, or that the patient was to pay $100 pesos. Useless. Misleading.
It is obvious why they refused me a copy of my own invoice. They are collecting from me AND Palic at the same time. Double dipping. The invoice is proof. All the front end staff are in on it. If they do this often enough it raises the income on a lucrative business or the staff pockets the extra money. And the invoice would prove that. So there is no way in hell they would give me the proof of their insurance FRAUD.
BTW, the doctor said I have pneumonia. I went the next day to Bournegal in Puerto Plata. It was not pneumonia. So much for the wrong diagnoses you get at CMC.
I will add this. Last august I went to the same Sosua CMC for blood tests. I have diabetes and had swollen feet. Other than that I was fine. After the blood tests I was told the results would be ready the next morning. I said “OK, I will go home to Cabarete and come back tomorrow.” What followed was a huge argument with staff. They insisted I must stay the night. It was around 5:30 PM. I said over and over “No way. I am going home to sleep in my own bed. I will be back tomorrow.” Two large male orderlies flanked me. Each grabbed one arm. The insisted I was to stay. If I did not agree they would give me a “needle” and I would have to stay. I caved in and stayed. The next day my son was given a invoice for close to $1000 USD for the night. You do not believe me? This is 100% true. At that time I decided not to write about it. After my second experience with this fraudulent enterprise I said enough is enough.  I might add that Bournegal, a much better hospital, charges under a hundred a night for their best rooms.
Sosua needs a new hospital or one that is honest and competent. I cannot say if the owners are in on the fraud. Maybe they know nothing. But 100% of the booking staff were in on it and refused me a copy of my own invoice. I will be warning Palic Insurance of the theft and fraud. Maybe they can deal with it. Until then I drive the extra miles to Puerto Plata.
One last thing. I told the staff their actions and refusing me my invoice would be all over Facebook. They just laughed. So I did what I promised them I would do. Posted this. Also I emailed the doctor who diagnosed me and asked him for 1. A copy of my invoice 2. Contact information of the owner Dr. Spitalli so I could let him know what is going on in his hospital when he is not there. Give him a chance to respond.
The doctor who diagnosed me saw my request days ago and has not answered.

Last I checked, there is no law that says a hospital can keep you against your will. Nor can a mechanic keep your car against your will. You got fleeced for sure.

These stories are the reason I decided not to move to the DR from Puerto Rico. Despite excellent health at 68, doctors and hospital stays probably are in my future. A fairly successful expat advised me that the best hospitals by far are in Santo Domingo.

There is one of the best in DR in Santiago ... don't remember the name though ... but almost everyone says that Bournegal in Puerto Plata is very good.
