Late evening/night cambios for non-US currencies
« on: April 16, 2024, 01:57:43 AM »
Hey everyone,

Sorry for yet another question, I tried searching for GBP/CAD/euro but the results are mostly about GBP in Santo Domingo or quite old

I have a mix of USD/GBP/CAD/EUR and planning to get some DOP at the bank for paying taxi etc.
If I do have to change money, where is good after 1800 hrs ? I can see Caribe/WU etc. Danny on W&R was talking about some local guys but I want to avoid due to the risk of fake notes.

Are the local cambios ok with a slight torn USD bill ? I got 1 like that and worried about some posts about clean, new bills. Which is weird because that $100 bill will spend just fine in most places of the world.

If anyone is on the ground, please can you post the current exchange rates for USD/GBP ?

I can wire myself some DOP via western union but with fees the spread is like like 6-7 pesos.
I can withdraw from a ATM with a card that gives the mastercard exchange rate with no fees but not sure of local fees so keeping it as backup

Thanks !

I have found the best exchange rate for non-US money is in Plaza Colonial, There is a place in the far back corner , they buzz you in (there's a wooden bench right outside the door). This place is not open late  though. Just 2 minutes up Duarte st.(toward Pedro) is another good one (just before you get to the small Playero market) they are open late.

Use pesos for everything....don't just limit them to taxis, etc.

As for what's open after 6pm, along the strip there are a few small bank/change windows open around that time.

And I know folks say don't use the street "change" guys, but I've been using them for years and have had zero issues.  But I also won't argue against anybody that still wants to avoid em.

And since after hour change locations are limited, please know that anybody issuing change late will most certainly lower the exchange rate. So anticipate what you'll need and get it during the day.

I went to this place during the day time (due to the advice on lower rates in the evening) and got 58 for USD on Friday, quite a good rate as it was only 57 cents lower than the mid market rate. It is not easily visible but the shopkeepers helped. I paid it forward when I came out by helping a brother who was also looking. Looks like the locals also use this place.

The guy said this place is open 9 AM to 5 PM

I noticed that the local taxi drivers use it, that's why I only go there now.
