Title: Prepaid cellphones
Post by: brooklynfinest40 on January 14, 2014, 10:59:33 AM
What's up fellas, I am Brian. I've been going to the Dominican Republic for about 6-7 years and will be heading to Sosua this coming Friday. I don't consider myself a vet, but I know enough to navigate around the Sosua area, and my spanish is decent. I am curious about a good place to buy a pre-paid phone to call some chicas I know. I considered changing my local AT&T service to include international calling temporarily, but I didn't do it. Then I thought maybe I should just call from the hotel room. But I think a pre-paid cell phone to make (809) and (829) calls would be better. Any ideas where I can get one?

There is an Orange office right behind Pedro Clisante. I forget the name of that street. Its next to a bank. Can't miss it. Its about a block from After1 Disco/Casino but on the back side. Just unlock your phone before you go and purchase a sim card. Add minutes and your good to go. Make sure to take your passboard. You will need it to activate the chip. They will issue you a local number. If you run out of minutes you can always load more using their website from your room. No need to head over to the store to buy minutes. Saves you time.

What is a passboard? Did you mean passport? How much are sim card chips?

The orange office asks for a passport when setting up your sim card. If you go to the spot on the strip the brothers will hook you up with a card for 100RD. They don't ask for your passport. They're on the same side of the Street as la rumba, when walking to Passions. by the barber Shop.

So when I go to DR and change the Sim card my phone number will have to change while I'm out there?  Shouldn't it stay the same.

Correct. The phone number is tied to the SIM so you will get a DR number with your DR SIM.

Yes, they have all the same cellular technology as you have at home.

Just download WHATSAPP to your phone and use that to contact any chicas you meet.

On USA phones, WhatsApp works better using WiFi in the DR as the phone signals are not as great. Now when I am at the condo or resort, all I use is WhatsApp but when I am out and about with no Wi-Fi, I have text those chicas and face that bill when I return home.

There are two brothers in a little store on Pedro Clisante. Right by the Barber Shop if you walk from Rumba to Passions.  They can give you a Sim card with no passport. They're faster than the Orange shop and the card they give you lasts 6 months.
