Title: So you're going to the RD and speak no Spanish
Post by: Dothedamthing on April 16, 2021, 11:07:28 AM
Just some info I read and tried it yesterday. You get to the RD and you don't speak Spanish. You use the google translate app but it's too cumbersome at times and your tired of typing. You just wish you could talk and they can understand you and vise versa. Well fret no more you can for free. If you have an android smartphone, tablet, or a smart speaker like a google mini there is interpreter mode available. (If you have an Apple product you're on your own because I don't use them).

1. On your smartphone or tablet make sure the Google assistant voice mode is active. To make sure it's active just say Hey Google and if it prompts you for more info you're good to go. If not find the instructions to activate it on your phone. Google assistant is always active on a smart speaker.
2. Give your device the following command. "Hey Google be my interpreter"  It should respond by asking you what language you want translated. Tell it Spanish or if you're in another country whatever language is spoken.
3. It will instruct you to listen for the prompts when to speak and you should be good to go.
4. It will take what you say in real time and translate to Spanish and what she says into English.

I used my google home mini speaker and it was flawless. Hope this helps some of you. Here is the instructions link.

DoTheDamnThing,

Thanks for posting this! As you noted, this is a GREAT tool for people who heavily depend on Google Translate. As you noted, it is perfect for dictating short phrases or sentences in English, and then having Google repeat the phrase or sentences to your chica (or anyone else) in Spanish. It's a fantastic free tool. It won't help much if the goal is to become completely fluent in Spanish, but it is perfect for the monger who arrives in Sosua with virtually no Spanish skills at all.

Again, thanks for posting the link. I'm already playing around with this.

I had a bitch last year that had something similar on her IPhone. It definitely is a game changer. Just make sure both are speaking proper english/spanish, no slang.

No, I wrote what I meant "RD". If you ask  Dominicans what's the name of their country the will respond República Dominicana. If you go to their government website and read in Spanish it's República Dominicana. Their abbreviation is RD in their culture hence "RD".

@Stones I'm using it to help speed up my Spanish lessons. When I used it earlier today I had a Haitian chica. She spoke English so no big deal. When she started moaning and talking french I told the speaker to translate. She was shocked that the speaker was translating. She jumped up and started looking around for someone else in the condo, It was hilarious!!

@tug I agree that we should learn the basics to any country  where we visit. Thats why I started taking Spanish a while back. It shouldn't be a constant goto but a tool to help until you get more fluent. But you and I both know there are those who have been coming to Sosúa for a while and barely know how to say hola!! I know this because there are people on this site who have told others they don't speak Spanish and there is no need to learn it or speak it while visiting.

Correct sir, At least the basics,,,, Even as a newbie, best bet is  learn a few phrase so your not a deer in the head lights or get scammed by a chica,  Also the more trips you make and listen and practice a few phrases, to get by  or if you have a good trusted repeat that you may have converstions with in spanish helps  You dont have to be fluent but basics can go a long way. !
