The DR....people are not as uptight as Americans

However, consider by means of contrast that public taxis are commonly used by many Dominicans, and that it is absolutely normal for a man and a woman who do not know each other to share the front seat of a Toyota Corolla or for a girl of 18 to be in the lap of a man of 50. While this is not an overtly sexual situation, imagine, if you can, the same form of transportation in the US. Women would immediately be claiming to have been traumatized for life and be suing the taxi service for millions of dollars; any man who got an erection with a woman on his lap would have to register as a sex offender and not be allowed within 5 miles of his own children, etc, etc. The difference in attitudes shows how highly sensitized Americans are with regard to sexuality and bodily contact compared to Dominicans who tend to regard close physical contact as a trivial matter and sex as a normal bodily function.

Yes, there are good girls who don't date tourists, but I don't think there are a whole lot of virgins.

Although some authors point to the existence of cabanas all over the DR as an indication of Dominican prudishness and a desire to keep sexual relationships secret, the very existence of cabanas all over the island, including in non tourist areas indicates a tolerance of sexual rendezvous that would not be found in the US. I imagine that a fair amount of bed occupancy in corporate motels in the US is probably booked for sexual purposes, but it would be considered shocking to rent rooms for short times, and no doubt it is more profitable to charge for a full night regardless of how long the room is used.
